Nutrition Care for Veterans, From Providers Who Understand Military Life

Veteran-Owned Business in Network with VA Community Care

Serving Veterans through VA Community Care.

Eligible Veterans may receive nutrition counseling with one of our Registered Dietitians when authorized by the VA.

Getting Started

Ask your VA provider for a Community Care referral for nutrition services/Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). Request Carolina Core Nutrition as your preferred community provider. Once we receive your authorization, we'll help you get scheduled.

Already Have a Referral?

Your VA authorization determines the services, dates, and visits approved for your care. If your authorization is nearing expiration and you'd like to continue nutrition counseling, please contact us so we can help with the next steps.

PTSD, Trauma & Eating Disorders

New research shows 1/3 of female veterans and 1/5 of male veterans are living with eating disorders. Eating disorders have the second highest mortality rate of all mental health diagnoses, with suicide being the leading cause of death.  Strict weight standards in the military can change how we view weight. Even if you never failed your tape test, witnessing how other services members were treated for failing their weight test can have a lasting impact. The risk of being discharged for being overweight is heavy - pun intended. It means we are no longer worthy of serving our country solely because of our weight. It is a perfectly normal response to an abnormal situation to use food to cope with trauma. It gives us a sense of control that is lacking in other areas of our lives. If you have struggled with weight, whether in service or not, please schedule an appointment.  Even if you've never struggled with weight, we would be honored to serve you. We work with a variety of conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, digestive disorders, and much more.  Our approach is compassionate, evidence-based, trauma-informed, and judgment-free. We work to help you nourish your body without recreating the rigid food rules, shame, or weight-focused environment you may have experienced during military service. We got your six battle!

Military Service Can Change Your Relationship With Food

Military service often comes with strict weight, body composition, and fitness standards. Years of weigh-ins, dieting to meet standards, irregular eating schedules, and pressure surrounding weight can continue to affect your relationship with food long after leaving the military. Veterans may also be at increased risk for disordered eating and eating disorders, particularly when trauma or PTSD is present. At Carolina Core Nutrition, we understand that nutrition care for Veterans needs to consider the whole person—not just the number on the scale. Our Registered Dietitian Nutritionists provide compassionate, evidence-based care without restrictive diets, shame, or judgment.
